6 The Silver Circle and the Bread of Fire

Thursday, 18 June 2026

The morning in Borgarnes was unforgiving. The wind howled through the streets, forcing us back indoors after a short walk. Ramesh braved his run, but the rest of us surrendered to warmth. With a relaxed reporting time, we set out for the Silver Circle tour, the pace slower, the mood lighter, as though the land itself was giving us a breather before the next surge of adventure.

At a traditional horse ranch, we met the sturdy Icelandic horses, their thick coats and gentle eyes telling stories of survival in harsh winters. Their unique gait fascinated us, a rhythm born of centuries of adaptation. A miniature geyser erupted nearby, a reminder of the restless energy beneath the land. Then came the bread — rye baked underground by geothermal heat, dense and sweet, slathered with butter and paired with chocolate. It melted in our mouths, a rustic treat that felt like a gift from the earth itself, a taste of fire transformed into nourishment.

We stopped at the Husafell Stone, the legendary strongman’s test of strength, its silent presence daring us to imagine the feats of men who had lifted it centuries ago.

Later, we descended into a lava cave. The subterranean world was cold, silent, and surreal. Walking through tubes carved by molten rock thousands of years ago, we felt like characters in Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth. The basalt walls whispered of fire and fury, the chill reminded us how close we were to the edge of the habitable world.

Dinner was simpler — Subway sandwiches and local ice cream. But even here, Iceland played its tricks. The ice cream tasted salty, and then we noticed the shop’s name: Ísbúð Huppu. In Tamil, “Uppu” means salt. The cosmic joke wrote itself, and laughter carried us through the evening.

The day had given us bread baked by fire, caves carved by fury, and humor written in salt. Tomorrow, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula awaited, promising glaciers, volcanoes, and a walk along the edge of the world…
